Job Description:

Supporting the Head of Pensions in the management of all corporate pension arrangements. Responsible for managing investment operations for the defined benefit pension scheme and providing operational investment support to the Trustee of the Sainsbury’s Pension Scheme and the Head of Treasury. Managing DC pension strategy and policy for the defined contribution schemes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage treasury function and cash flows, including deposits with money market funds
  • Monitor and report on custodian performance, ensuring best practice is followed
  • Responsible for the Trustee’s investment related documentation
  • Prepare Trustee Board updates and maintain the Investment Committee risk register
  • Check and facilitate payment of investment manager and adviser invoices
  • Manage relevant service supplier relationships including investment adviser, legal adviser and custodian
  • Manage the colleagues and responsibilities of the Pensions Investment Team
  • Facilitate appointment/removal of investment managers including liaison with investment legal advisers
  • Act as Secretary to the Investment Committee, liaise with the Chair and advisers to agree the Committee’s schedule, organise meeting content, facilitate meetings and ensure actions completed
  • Act as a main point of contact for the Trustee, investment related advisers and investment managers

Job Requirements:

  • Manage the relationship with DC schemes’ provider, Legal & General
  • Represent the Company on provider meetings (Mastertrust employer group or IGC)
  • Manage the DC governance committees
  • Ensure compliance with the Pensions Department’s terms of reference with the Trustee and the investment, cash and tax manuals are regularly updated
  • Report on the Scheme’s financial risks and asset returns
  • Manage the preparation and audit of the investment and asset related parts of the Scheme Report and Accounts and the Company accounts
  • Manage the regular review of the investment options
  • Prepare DC updates for the Group Pensions Committee
  • Arrange the preparation of VAT, HMRC and overseas tax returns and reclaims
  • Ensure that the DC schemes are auto enrolment compliant

Qualification & Experience:

  • Ability to build and maintain good working relationships with the Head of Pensions and the Department, the Trustee particularly the Investment Committee chair, the Head of Treasury, advisers and suppliers
  • Have or be close to completing PMI or relevant pension qualification
  • Knowledge of pension scheme financial reporting
  • Practical defined benefit pensions experience
  • A team player, working effectively within frameworks without direct supervision
  • Resilience – flexibility, able to cope with time pressure, risk and ambiguity
  • Provide leadership, clear instructions and immediate feedback to the Pensions team
  • An understanding of the importance of strong financial controls
  • Planning and prioritisation skills, the ability to plan and deliver workload accurately and in good time
